Case Study: St Mary's Church, Sheffield
Jowett Stone Masons of Nottingham called on Emperor's Commercial Scaffolding to carry out specialist work on St Mary's Church, Sheffield, which presented a new challenge. Unlike most scaffolding work, the design of this historical building meant that the team had to work to strict specification as set out by the structural engineers.
Where the majority of scaffold work is constructed from the ground upwards, this was not possible at St Mary's, this is where emperors expertise was needed. The shape of the buildings 140ft tower meant that the scaffolding could not be supported from below. There, at 70ft high, a total of 94 unit beams had to be craned in to enable the team to create a suspended scaffold structure around the tower in order in order to support the scaffolding that was then built above. To complete the job, four miles of boards were used and 110 tonnes of scaffolding.
